IMG_2084I usually make a smoothie at least once or twice a week during the summer months. My diet changes depending on the season but in the summer I try to incorporate a lot more plants. There are just so many ridiculously good things to try at the farmers market. I try to hit up the Green City Market – Lincoln Park every Wednesday and Saturday. If I miss that one, I’ll check out the Logan Square Farmers Market on Sundays.

I generally have a boat load of kale in my fridge because I just can’t say no to Patti’s at Earth and Skye Farm. It is as beautiful as a bouquet of flowers! FYI if you ever need to get me flowers, I’d be extremely happy with a bunch of kale. Get it from Patti and you’ll totally make me swoon. I was getting a little sick of my fruit smoothie with kale or spinach in it and wanted to try something new. I realized a detox smoothie would be perfect for a hot summer day. So I started to brainstorm the ingredient list. I wanted it to be cleansing for the body but also make your tastebuds dance. I knew for sure there would be kale. I’d probably add some ginger and a lemon in this wicked breakfast.

I usually make my own almond milk or another nut or seed milk. It’s just water and almonds! You can add a date to sweeten it up. You can use the pulp as almond flour too! There are lots of benefits of making your own milks.

But let’s talk about the benefits of this smoothie! Kale is a plant protein that contains a bunch of antioxidants, fiber, calcium, vitamin A, iron, magnesium. It’s helpful for improving digestion, increasing immunity and creating glowing skin. The lemon is detoxifying and filled with vitamin C. Lemons also help to purify the blood and balance pH levels. Read more on drinking lemon water each morning here. Bananas help to promote healthy digestion and regularity. Cucumbers create hydration in the skin and help to debloat individuals. They’re also filled with electrolytes. Celery is good for detoxification and decreasing bloating. Spirulina is a wonderful plant protein. It comes from an algae and it’s a really easy way to add more greens into your diet. It’s helpful for weight management, energy, brain cognition and function and it contains iron, B vitamins, essential fatty acids and chlorophyll. Chia seeds help you to feel full longer and help with hydration. Ginger helps to stimulate digestion, circulation and sweating.
