img_2912The fans are screaming, the energy on the field is electric, and there is still enough time in this game for the tides to change. That was the momentum of the Clemson vs. Alabama NCAA football championship game last night. Bama had been up all game until the fourth quarter when Clemson finally took the lead making the score 28-24 with 4:38 left. Just to make things interesting, Alabama came back with a touchdown to bring the score to 31-28 with 2:07 left to play. Did this give Clemson too much time?

Maybe the answer is “just enough.” Just enough time for nine plays and Hunter Renfrow to receive the two-yard pass from Deshaun Watson right in the end zone. The Tigers win it all with one second left in the game.

What really drove these Clemson Tigers? The answer was “love.” Clemson’s coach, Dabo Swinney, attributed his win to his word of the year: love. “To see my guys fight, and just believe. I told them tonight, I told them that the difference in the game was going to be love. My word all year has been love. And I told them we’re going to win it because we love each other,” Swinney said.

This melted my heart because every year I pick a word to live by and my word for 2016 was also “love.” I made it my goal to put more love into everything I do. This included my career, relationships, and even the meals I prepared. To see this emerge on the football field was beautiful. A place where hostility can fill the air, love trumped all and gave the Clemson Tigers a season they will always remember.

Love truly resonated with these Clemson Tigers and myself in 2016. So, 2017 will give me more of a reason to “believe” in the power of my intentions. What is your word of the year for 2017?
